A day at the park with cousins

Posted by Dawn at Wednesday, March 10, 2010
Today, went to my usual weekly visitation at parents' place. The children, together with Janine and Joyanne were all at the playground having a fun time!

Caleb was usually with Janine while Danielle was either by herself playing the slide or she would go up to Joyanne and smile at her.

The children then all went to the longest slide in the playground and had a go at it! (including Danielle and Joyanne)

That's one thing similar with my children and my brother's children- they are all so active and daring!

Here are more 'monkey' shots!

Danielle holding on to the bar and swinging as well as lifting up her legs!

And there's Janine climbing up the slide (with assistance from a mother whose 3 year old son was also climbing)

What I have learnt from all this is never stop your child from doing such things, just as long as you set some boundaries or take precautions. You need to let your child explore and give them the courage to do so. I know of many parents who are afraid to let their kids do such 'dangerous' acts as they are fearful themselves and think that they will fall down. If you create such a fear in them, they will grow up being scared of everything and not being able to experience the victory that they can have because they 'conquered' an obstacle. This will definitely affect their self-esteem as they grow up.

My rationale is just as long as its not "life" or "serious-injury" threatening acts, I will let them do whatever they want to do when they are playing. If they fall down, then let them learn. We all learn from our falls and mistakes..So for their sakes, please do not protect your children too much! Give them opportunities to learn.
