Early birthday celebration

Posted by Dawn at Friday, June 06, 2008
A week before my actual birthday, my family celebrated for me. We had dinner at Baba King in Expo as I wanted to eat Peranakan food.

The food was very delicious. I always love Peranakan food because of its different kinds of spices.

We ordered Ayam Buah Keluak (my favourite dish as I love eating the flesh of the buah keluak nut.

We also had devil curry beef which was amazingly spicy. I loved it! As you can see, its all covered with curry.

Then another of my favourite is brinjal! Did you know you should use green brinjal instead of the usual purple long ones to deep fry? The green ones can only be found where there is a large malay community, e.g Geylang Serai. Yup, the owner of the restaurant actually told us and taught me how to cook it.

If you fry the usual purple ones, the skin gets very "plastic" and hard. So, the texture is not as nice. And the secret to making the chilli is by adding cumin!

Then, we ordered the usual Peranakan dish- chap chye! (or mixed vegetables)

We also ate the black Pomfret with sambal (dipped in black sauce) which was the most disappointing dish. The fish wasnt as fresh as I hoped it would be. But of course, the sambal was tasty!

Another interesting dish was the black pepper soft shell crab with deep fried curry leaves. Its a dish that my family loved. It doesnt look presentable but the taste is so yummy. (shucks, I am drooling right now just thinking about it)

We also had two big bowls of pong tauhu soup (tofu, chicken balls served with bamboo shoots in a delicious prawn and chicken broth). Its very tasty and light. Very suitable to go with our spicy meal.

Then, while we were eating, the owner came up to us and decided to prepare for us 2 special dishes. One of which is the buak keluak nut flesh which he mixes with prawn and sambal for us to taste. Oooo...it is too die for. Its not in the menu as he made it specially for us. I loved to mix this dish with rice.

And the other dish he wanted us to try specially was the fish otak, which he used pacific fish dory to cook!

With all so tasty dishes, its so nice to eat the curry spices with rice. So, be prepared to order more than one plate of rice!

Another must-order food is the lemongrass, lime drink! So refreshing!

After our dinner, Caleb and Janine went out of the restaurant to play with the owner's 2 kids. They were kicking the ball to one another. And yes, Caleb managed to kick the ball as well (with some help).

The owner of the restaurant also told us a lot about his background, his family brought up and the peranakan history about how there are many different types of peranakan. They have the indian ones, the Arab ones etc etc...so that is why his restaurants represents all the different kinds.

I knew he is a true blue Peranakan from the way he talked...he just kept talking..and talking the whole night through.

I would definitely recommend this place to you for its excellent service from the owner himself as well as the great spices (that is if you love spicy food). Go there for dinners as its less crowded especially when there isnt any fairs or exhibitions on. You will surely get personal attention!

Today was also the last day where I do not have to officially go to school for lessons...and my form class gave me a surprised celebration. They bought a nice yummy chocolate cake for me. So sweet of them. Very touched. Thanks guys!
