Missions Seminar

Posted by Dawn at Saturday, January 05, 2008
This morning, went to school at 715am as there is Mission Seminar. Its a yearly affair where all staff from my school have to go to Maris Stella Convent since we are a missions school.

Went to school early in Karen's car and then we took the bus with the teachers. I booked for 2 big buses and in the end, many teachers all squeezed in one bus while the rest of us (think only about 8 of us) went on the second bus.

During the bus journey, I was seated in front with Mr Rahmat on the other side of the aisle. Initially, I was reading my book until I remembered I always wanted to ask Mr Rahmat one question which I was quite curious- that is about his trip to Mecca, the holy city in Islam.

I have been amazed at how millions of people would gather once in a lifetime to such a place. So, I asked Mr Rahmat all about his experience and what it is like. I really learnt a lot throughout the whole journey and what kind of logistics the Saudi Arabia government would prepare and do just to cather for millions of people.

So throughout the journey, Mr Rahmat shared with me his pilgrimage to Mecca with his wife and 2 daughters! That was some kind of general knowledge input for me to learn and understand about other people's religion.

Anyway, when the bus finally reached Maris Stella Convent which was along Holland Road. It was nothing I expected. Anyway, we had breakfast first before going up to a room for the session.

I would say, most teachers actually had a great time. The most memorable thing that happened was when this lady named Bridget shared about her missions work among the migrant workers- the maids in Singapore. Her story was so real that it touched many of our staff's hearts. She shared of how maids were abused by their employers that they had to run away. She showed pictures of the abuse as well.

Then the migrant workers performed for us 2 songs and a skit. All very nice and touching. 2 of the workers also gave their testimony about how God has been good to them despite all that they went through.

The session ended at 11 plus am and then we went down for lunch before heading back to school. Lunch was a nice bento set meal that comes with fruit juice.

After lunch, we went out to wait for the bus. While waiting, me and Juliane went to the pond to check out the koi fishes and turtle. There was this particular turtle on the rock which didnt move at all and it was huge. I was telling Juliane that it is a statue and not real. However, Juliane proved me wrong by going up close to the tortoise and it moved by retreating his head in the shell. It was quite funny.

When the first bus came, almost all the staff went up again as they probably wanted to reach school earlier and didnt want to wait for the next one.

So only a few of us waited..

When the second bus finally came (probably about 10-15 mins after the first one left), we boarded and this time round, I was sitting with 3 male colleagues- Benson, Boon Chien and Anthony. I was busy chatting with them and getting ideas from them for my staff activities. It was an interesting conversation in the bus. These 3 guys are really passionate about their work and they really have a lot drive. Its nice to see that in teachers as we definitely need that in teaching our students.

As we were so engrossed yakking away, the bus suddenly stopped and the door opened. We were wondering what happened. Then we saw teachers coming up to our bus. It seemed that the 1st bus had some problems as smoke came out of the bus. So our bus stopped behind them and gave the teachers a lift back to school. What a day!

Once we reached back, Karen gave me a lift back home as she also stays in Punggol.

When I reached home immediately, I saw Caleb and gave him a big hug and kiss! Then brought him down to my rooftop garden park to play.

Here's Caleb enjoying himself. He can now sit by himself on the rocking animal..

That's my boy!
