My students...

Posted by Dawn at Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Yesterday, my class had BBQ in Costa Sands Chalet at Downtown East.I remember the last time I had BBQ with my class was in June this year - when I was still carrying Caleb in my uterus(8 months pregnant!).

So today was a good time to bring Caleb to see my students. Finally!

But bringing along Caleb meant that I couldnt stay long for my class BBQ because he had to go home to have his sponge bath and proper sleep. Its important to create a routine so that he can sleep at a regular time.

Went to the chalet at 6 plus pm. Waited for CT to come home from work to go together. When we went, I was surprised that the food wasnt cooked yet. They have not started the fire. Surprised because there are more than 20 people and yet, things were not done as fast as it should.

So anyway, went there and played PSP with my students. Though I love computer games and gadgets, I do not think I would like to get PSP for myself since I prefer huge screens.

Here are my students playing with each other though sitted so far apart. How wonderful technology can be!

Some students were trying to get the fire started initially when I arrived.

Here are the first food to be barbecued..

This was another BBQ pit we had..

There was also a table of helpers who was cutting onions, peeling potatoes, mashing the potatoes etc..

This was the only food that I tasted for my class BBQ since it was the only food ready at the time I was about to leave, which was at 8 pm.

Caleb fell asleep in the air-conditioned room after his 'jumps' on the bed...

Today, I had Girl Guides Camp. Its 3 days of camp from 8am to 5pm. Since I just returned from maternity leave, I did not have time to plan for an overnight one which I am sure some of the girls would benefit and enjoy...

But anyway, today for lunch, the girls cooked instant noodles, sausages, fishballs and baked beans in mess tins.

This was what took place..

The leaders asked me if I would like to join them and I agreed. Though the noodles they cooked for me were overcooked, thus soft and soggy, and the soup was over-diluted thus tasteless, I still enjoyed myself because of the company. We sat on the floor to eat and as long as the food kept me not hungry, I was fine with anything.

So far, the camp has been alright but of course, there are many areas that can definitely improve.

I was just thinking throughout the day about what is the similarity between my class chalet and this girl guides camp- how students run these activities...and I came to realised that there are similarities...

Here are my conclusions...(no offence to anyone.but just points that I have reflected on so that I can learn or improve in whatever tasks I am in-charge of for future references)

1) More thought processes can be made when organising an activity. For e.g wet weather programme? How to include all the students in an activity so that everyone is engaged? (for efficiency purposes)

2) Do I have a list of all the logistics I need to buy and bring? When should I buy it? How much time should I allow myself to buy the stuff?

3) How do I delegate the work so that I will not be the only person doing everything while the rest just slack and do their own things? How do I motivate them to carry out my 'orders'?

My wish is that those under me (be it my students or teachers) will be willing to work hard for me because of their deep respect and trust they have for me and not because they are 'forced' or obligated to.

Anyway, I hope I can be a better leader for my students, for the teachers whom I will be taking charge of next year under my committee as well as also for my son, Caleb.

But of course apart from that, I would also hope to be a better wife, submitting to CT and supporting him in all areas.
