Caleb's 1st visit to the Zoo!

Posted by Dawn at Saturday, February 09, 2008
Despite the CNY weekend, we took time off as a family to go to the Zoo. Reached there at 8:30am so that we can beat the crowd.

The zoo had a lot of performances and special activities going on related to CNY.

Like this one...the largest rodent, Capybara-celebrating the year of the rat!

Then we went to catch the bathing of the elephants. Here's Caleb looking at those huge Asian Elephants.

Asian Elephants do not have as large ears as the African ones because ears help them to cool them. The temperature in Africa is many times hotter than the Asian climate. Interesting, huh?

Then we walked through a garden with nice flowers..

Especially, one of my favourite- the orchids.I love orchids because they look very elegant and sophisticated.

One of my favourite exhibits in the zoo has to be the Himalayan Baboons. I love it because they have so many of them..all different sizes and looks.

Its very interesting to stay there for a while to observe the monkey behaviour.

As we were walking in the zoo, we noticed Orang Utans swinging above us.

Look at this particular Orang Utan attempting to walk across on a thin rope

Another exhibit I love is the one with the polar bear because polar bears are huge and docile looking. They look so cuddly.. The mother bear is behind, while the son, Inuka is the bigger one in front.

Look how huge Inuka is. The funny thing is that when they are first borned, they weigh only about 400-500 grams! Much smaller than a human being! The reason why they can grow so big is because the mother's milk has about 30% fat content in it!

Here's my family at the zebra station..

Caleb seemed to have fun..

Another exhibit I like to see is the Proboscis Monkey.

The reason why they have large stomachs is due to the bacteria. They eat plants and the bacteria helps them to break down the poison and neutralise it.

They have webbed feet too. It is to help them to walk better on muddy areas or mangrove swamps.

Here's more pictures of Caleb..

I am really glad he enjoyed himself.

At the end of the trip, we manage to catch the lion dance show. It was very good!

There was a stall selling decorative art using malt candy. Very interesting.

After a long day, I couldnt wait to go home to rest. So tiring walking the whole zoo.

However, at night, we were in the mood for walking once again. We walked around our neighbourhood to catch the CNY lights.

There were so many lanterns and lights

Actually, there should be more decorations lighted up but when we went, it wasnt light up. SO sad..if not, it would be spectacular. Here's the decorations without lights.

Nevertheless, we had fun looking at the other decorations and it was a nice walk, considering how windy it was.
