Off to Orlando

Posted by Dawn at Sunday, September 04, 2005
This morning, left the house at 545am for our flight at 7am in Mobile Regional Airport. Did not have to go too early since it is a domestic flight. Transitted at Atlanta for an hour after about 45 mins flight there. After that, it was about an hour flight or less to Orlando. All quite nearby which I like.

Once we reached Orlando International Airport, we collected our rental car which we had to take a shuttle bus to collect. About 10 mins drive away. We were given a Dodge Neon 2 Litre car. It is the cheapest car. Big enough for 4 of us (Kok Fong and wife). In Singapore, 2 Litre car seems a big deal..but in US, 2 L car are the low end cars.. Cars here are usually 3L and above.

After collecting the car, we drove to Daytona Beach. It was about an hour drive there. Once we reached, we went for lunch first as we were all starving. It was already 2pm. I had fish burger with potato salad while CT had beef kabob with noodles. Food is not too bad. After a very filling lunch, we went to Daytona Beach to see the Atlantic Ocean.

We had to pay to enter the beach and we could actually drive into the sandy area, near the waters.

After parking our car, we walked towards the water. We saw an ice cream truck passing by with melodious music. It was driving so near the waters. Quite cool. People were sunbathing, surfing, swimming, driving in 4WD rented buggees.

After soaking our feets at the water and taking some pictures, we made our way to the next attraction I wanted to see. The place is Macdonalds! You must be wondering what so special about Macdonalds. Well, this Macdonald in Orlando is the world's largest - with big play place, arcade area and features gourmet food like pizza, burritos, all sorts of cakes including cheesecake, panini bread, spaghetti etc. So, I had to go there to take a look.

It is 2 storey big with arcade and has a small aquarium of fishes at the ground level where people sit and have their meals. Lots of arcade machines to play as well as a souvenir shop in it. Here are some pictures.

After visiting McDonalds, we checked in to our hotel. We are staying diff hotel from Kok Fong and wife as Kok Fong accidentally cancelled the hotel reservation as he thought he would not be able to go Orlando since we were supposed to fly from New Orleans. It was only until CT managed to take a flight out from Mobile to Orlando, then Kok Fong wanted to rebook the hotel but they cancelled it already. So, Kok Fong had to book another place-a cheaper one.

Kok Fong drove and dropped us as our hotel was on the way to theirs. We dropped to check in and bathed, then met up for dinner in one hour's time at 9pm. CT was not too happy as there were hidden charges. The hotel has facilities which we need to pay for- 3 bucks a day to use them. It is compulsory to pay even if we do not use the facilities. It includes, gym, swimming pool, basketball, tennis courts, playground, putting green, shuttle to Disney,Universal Studios,SeaWorld.

Though with all these charges, I enjoy our hotel as there are so many facilities and it is 10 mins drive to Disney World.

We dropped by at a small supermarket place to buy water, juice and chocolate milk as I had a fridge in our room. After that, we went to "Uno-Chicago Grill" for dinner. It was the same chain restaurant I ate in Chicago. They are famous for their deep dish pizza. But I did not order that as we have already tried that in Chicago. SO, I had Greek Salad for dinner as I was still full from Lunch and had a very bad sore throat. Ordered coke and added salt as well. Heard it is good for throat because it is cooling. CT ordered burger and fries.

People seem to eat very late here. They stream into the restaurant even though it was 10 plus pm already. So different from Mobile. Well, Florida is a popular place for tourists..so I guess that is why everythig here opens till late.

Reached back hotel at 1055pm. Slept close to midnight as we spent some time unpacking and getting ready for tomorrow's trip to Universal. We also watched TV before we slept. So tired from the travelling-flight and car.
