Craving...

Posted by Dawn at Tuesday, December 18, 2007
When I first discovered I was pregnant last year in around Oct/Nov...I had to restrain myself from eating a lot of things..some of which are my favourite like kaya toast with half-boiled eggs, as well as sashimi!

So for 9 months, I had to control myself though I thought about it all the time throughout my pregnancy. So, CT promised that he would take me to the popular Japanese restaurant in Hotel Miramar, "Ikoi" after I have given birth. So FINALLY..CT brought me there today.

You have to book a month in advance to eat in this restaurant because of how popular it is. It is fully booked every night. It is reasonably priced at $33++ per person for the ala-carte buffet which is reasonable because of the sashimi they have!

Before we went to the restaurant, I met CT at Liang Court to walk around first because our dinner was booked for 630pm but CT finishes work early and by the time we met up, it was only 5 plus. I took a train to meet him. Went to Meidi-Ya (Japanese) supermarket to look around. I love going to supermarkets..guess I am just so AUNTIE...cant help it since I love food.

Going to the supermarket was an eye-opening experience for me. (Pictures blur because I was discreetly trying to snap pictures with my handphone without anyone noticing..)

Here's why I enjoyed my experience in the supermarket....

Yup, this is a watermelon for the price of $119!!!

Here's more..

Yes, your eyes are not playing tricks. This rockmelon is going for the hefty price of $79.90!

And 2 apples for $16.50...

So what's so special about these fruits? Well, it is air flown all the way from Japan and because the way Japanese grows their meat, vegetables and fruits, what comes out of it is sweet and juicy...

Here's a purple carrot I spotted..

What's going to a Japanese supermarket without looking at the beef section? Its a definite must for me to visit the beef section because Japanese beef is simply heavenly as they are well-marbled...

Here's some info about beef..

Kobe beef refers to beef from the black Tajima-ushi breed of Wagyu cattle. The massive increase in popularity of Kobe beef in the United States has led to the creation of "Kobe-style" beef, taken from domestically-raised Wagyu in order to meet the demand

Their diets are strictly controlled and during the final fattening process, cattle are fed hefty quantities of sake and beer mash. Each animal gets a daily massage as well.

Anyway, back to my supermarketing experience...

They have like a pool area with water flowing down to keep the bean curd . How interesting..

At one shelf, they also have boxes of frozen authentic ramen flown straight from Japan. It costs $20 per box.

And cuttlefish snack that costs...$21!!

After looking at the supermarket for almost an hour, we walked to our dinner place at Hotel Miramar.

We had so much to eat..its really not funny.

We were first served with complimentary dishes..

A complimentary bowl of edamame which we finished all because its so addictive

A complimentary Salmon Kaninabe soup..like steamboat

A complimentary salmon sashimi with some nice sweet sauce

As well as a complimentary seafood soup with lime juice in this teapot

We had a couple of plates of sashimi...

With octopus..

With cuttlefish..which I didnt find it fresh at all. It was disappointing...

I particularly enjoyed the swordfish best! Its so fresh and 'crunchy'. Thick too!

Lots of tempura..one order after another.

Also had shisamo (pregnant fish)

and agedashi tofu

Also had grilled fish- saba (mackerel), pike fish, salmon. The salmon was so fatty that it tasted so nice because of the smoky distinctive aroma and the crackling of the skin when I put it in my mouth.

We also had california and salmon skin handrolls

Had Japanese fish cake,

fish cake with cheese, Char Siew Ramen, breaded prawn, yakitori

As well as beef curry rice

I do not know what I was thinking when I kept eating and ordering..

I guess it was the torturing effects of waiting for more than 9 months that made me stuff all the sashimi and food...sigh.

I felt so sinful after that....Couldnt walk properly, shortness of breath, got so sick of food..

The funny thing is after one night, I woke up the next morning craving for sashimi once again! SIGH!

reading this entry made me salivate big time! I'm a huge fan of Japanese food (and half-boiled eggs too!). Also frequent Meidi-ya about once a month to stock up on my Japanese groceries and snacks. ;P Yum! I must definitely try out this Ikoi. Is the food really very fresh? *slurp*

The sashimi like salmon and swordfish is really fresh. But others like tuna and cuttlefish was a disappointment. I even spat out my cuttlefish because it was too tough and slimy. Yucks. Go for the sashimi, handrolls, tempura and grilled salmon. Those are the only things I feel its good.

So if you are a sashimi lover, you should go for it because its more worth than just buying one plate of mixed sashimi for about $20-30 bucks already.

But remember, dont expect the other food to be good. Most of the food in the menu are not spectacular. So be selective. The chicken (yakitori and fried chicken very dry)

by the way, I hope to go with you to Meidi-ya so that you can give me a tour of the place and food. The reason is because after that trip there, I felt I am missing out so much not knowing what is what..sigh.
