Scratches...painpain

Posted by Dawn at Monday, December 03, 2007
From birth to now, Caleb usually has red blotches on his face due to his pinching or scratching. I have kind of gotten used to it...but recently, he had a couple of bad scratches which really made my heart ache.

Here is the first one he got a few days ago..

It is quite a huge red scratch that has now turned brown. Initially, I was so afraid to hurt him when I bathe him. Did not dare to touch it when the scratch was still fresh and red. We figured he got this scratch from the seat belt of pram.

The next scratch really made me so scared because it was on the neck and it was bleeding. I even used alcohol swap to clean it. Of course, Caleb started crying cos of the stinging pain, but no choice. I had to clean it up.

I have no idea how he got this..Vicky thinks it may due to dryness of skin and maybe we did not dry properly after bath, so it might be due to slight eczema kind of symptom.

When you see this kind of thing, wont your heart ache?

So anyway, to those mummies out there with infants, do take note of areas like the neck (especially when they have lots of folds), the arm pits, areas behind their ears...must dry properly and check these areas once a while. That is one thing I learnt.

Yeah... I know exactly how you feel... I think the wound on the neck is from abrasion. I'll also dry Jed's neck throughly after bath, hoping to prevent that. But redness is inevitable, now that the folds of skin are always rubbing.

yeah, in addition to drying it, you know what I usually do? I'd press out a whole blob of baby lotion and just swipe it into the fold. after awhile the redness will go away. hmmmm, though you may wish to do that after the skin heals - when the skin's not broken, I mean.

Poor Caleb. You might like to try California Baby's Calendula Cream - which I've heard works wonders for eczema. For myself, I use the Aloe Vera Cream (also from California Baby) on my boy whenever there are any scratches, cuts or bites. Works well too.
