Learning Effective Communication

Posted by Dawn at Monday, December 17, 2007
I started adopting Effective Communication (EC)yesterday by reading his cues and bringing him to the potty. Results? Success! I guess it really helps when my helper, Vicky is very sensitive to Caleb's needs.

Here is a picture of Caleb poo pooing in the morning when he woke up. Photo cropped to prevent you from being disgusted by his poo.

Now everyday, he would also pee in the potty. His pee schedule is almost every 15 mins. I do only partial EC on him which means at night, I just let him wear his diaper to sleep through, without going to potty. I only bring him to the potty in the day time. So it seems he has picked up the sounds relating to pee and poo within a day which I am still quite amazed.

The main thing about EC is that you should not feel stressed or tired doing it. Its just a form of communication between you and your child- the more you do it, the more effective your communication. If you think you cannot handle full-time EC, then just opt for partial or whenever you feel comfortable.

Each time Caleb pees or poos inside the potty after I give the appropriate sound really makes my day! I dunno whether my eyes are playing tricks or not but it seems that Caleb is also happy after he does it in the potty.

I am really glad to be saving on washing my diaper cloth (thus saving detergent and water) as well as saving on the amount of disposable diapers. My wish is that once he can communicate by talking, it will be a smooth transition for him.

I feel pretty excited to find out where this experiment would go..will Caleb learn potty training by 1 year old? I do hope so...

Wow! Well done Caleb (and Mummy)!! Keep up the great effort! Jeddy poos at the same time each morning too but he usually poos while I'm feeding him. He seems to be able to associate with the mm mm sound too. Well, but I don't think I can handle the pee like you do!

wah congrats! my son is still eating/ pooing on his own time own target (all odd hours, even in his sleep too!), so I think it's very hard for me to attempt this although ppl esp my in-laws have been telling me to do it.

I guess everything takes effort, time and patience. And there is definitely no right or wrong choice. But for me, the thought of having him to go diaperless intrigues me so much that I will do anything to make that happen.
