Party time

Today is Caleb's cousin, Keelia's one month celebration. She was born 1 Sept on Teachers Day. Only about one month apart from Caleb. There are definitely plus and minuses being born so close to each other. The good thing is that my mother-in-law is very happy that just within 2 months, she has 2 grandchildren already. Brings more life and joy to the family. However, the down side is that friends and family will start to compare.

During the celebration, a lot of comments like, "aiyoh, why caleb grow so fast and the other one still so small?", "wha..caleb so cute..the other one keep sleeping." etc etc." I actually felt as if the attention was on Caleb which I didnt want. I felt bad. From the moment a baby is born, I feel he/she is subject to comparision right from the start. The first comparison would be," hmm..this baby's eyes looks like mummy's, the nose look like daddy's etc etc"

I,myself never liked to be compared especially when it makes me feel horrible about myself after the comparison. I feel everyone is an individual. That is why when I teach, I do not usually talk about the results of other classes whenever my students ask. They always ask how the other classes fare and I tell them that you shouldnt bother about how they did as the biggest competition is yourself and how you overcome your own weaknesses.

I know that sometimes, comparison is good as it makes one want to strive better. However in most cases, the result is not as such. Instead, it will only lower someone's self-esteem and that is not what I want in my child or my students.

I remember reading the "Mother & Baby" magazine and there was this section on, "I swear I'll never..." It talks about how when we were not parents, we swore that we'll never make goo goo noises, use a pacifier, let your child sleep with you etc etc and how you do all that once you become a parent. So, let me add two more to the list-I will never compare my child to another child and I will never let my child cause me to be late for any appointments. I will still be early and on time for whatever appointments I have. I will try at least...

Here is my niece,Janine who was so hyper during the party. She even went on the bouncer and rock herself. Thank God she didnt break it!
